On world malaria day 2025, Perseus Mining Ghana Limited Company collaborated with MediSite Services Ghana Limited to extend a helping hand to the Abenabena community in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality.
The day was marked by a clean-up exercise in the community and a donation of sanitary and medical items.
Among the items donated are treated mosquito nets, dustbins, hospital beds, malaria RDT kits and gallons of hand sanitizer.
At the event, it was revealed that Ghana, in 2023 alone, recorded an estimated 6.5 million malaria cases and over 11, 000 deaths. A WHO report affirmed the statistics, noting that the disease remains a worrying situation, especially, among pregnant women and children below 5 years.
By inference, the acting general manager of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited Company, Alex Kofi Oduro, believes that the theme for this year, “Malaria ends with us: Reinvest, reimagine, reignite”, is an action call against the disease.
“This is a day that reminds us of the significance of coming together as a community to battle a disease that continues to affect so many lives across Africa.
This year’s theme, Malaria ends with us: Reinvest, reimagine, reignite”, speaks directly to us all, aiming to raise awareness about the urgent actions needed in the fight against malaria, and emphasising the significance of continued investment, innovation, collaboration and commitment from the global malaria eradication community.”
Perseus Mining Ghana Limited Company donated 10 dustbins and 200 treated mosquito nets among other items to the Abenabena community.
Mr. Oduro highlighted the company’s corporate social responsibility, and how the company’s activities impact the health of community members in its catchment areas.
“As a mining company operating in this area, we recognise the critical role we must play in supporting the health and well-being of the communities around us. We therefore don’t take this responsibility lightly.
That is why we are reaffirming our commitment to strengthen efforts of prevention, improving awareness and ensuring early treatments.”
MediSite Services Ghana Limited is an indigenous company committed to providing sustainable quality medical services to remote locations in Ghana.
The company also donated 50 pieces of treated mosquito nets, 2 units of hospital beds, 500 pieces of malaria RDT kits (PF/PAN), 40 packs of examination gloves, 4 gallons of methylated spirit, 4 rolls of cotton wool, 5 gallons of hand sanitizer and 4 rolls of absorbent gauze to the community.
The operations and quality manager of the company, Leslie Mensah, shares that their gesture is part of a responsibility to highlight malaria, its causes and preventive measures.
“On world malaria day, we partnered with Perseus Mining Ghana Limited Company and Ghana Health Service to throw more light on malaria. We believe that the items we have donated will really help health professionals in the diagnoses and cure of malaria.”
Although Ghana is one of 15 high-burden malaria countries in the world, and 4% of malaria cases in West Africa as published by Severe Malaria Observatory, it does not deter the Municipal Health Director of Wassa Amenfi East, Lola Majeed Aikins, of hoping Ghana will join fellow African countries, Egypt and Morocco, on the list of malaria-free zones by 2030.
“We want to tell the community to be vigilant, and abide by preventive measures. Malaria actually starts with us, and it should end with us. So, that by the years 2028/2030, we will also be declared zero malaria-free. I believe with collaborative efforts, and all hands on deck, we shall also reach there.”
