Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Situation in Guinea-Bissau
TOKYO, Japan, April 18, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Japan condemns the attempt of the forcible and illegal seizure of power by some elements of the national army of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in the night of Thursday, April 12, and that of the dissolution of national institutions founded by its constitution.
Japan demands the immediate release of the detained political leaders and earliest possible restoration of constitutional order, and supports such demands made by the international community, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU).
Japan expects that all the parties concerned solve the differences through dialogue and will achieve national reconciliation, a democratic regime based upon the constitutional order, as well as the rule of law, which lead to the peace and stability of the nation.
