A student accused of defaming Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Monday denied the charge when he appeared in court.
Edward Makayi, who was arrested last week and has been slapped with three counts of defaming the Zambian leader and one count of insulting language, appeared before Magistrate Humphrey Chitalu.
He denied the charges when they were read out to him, according to public broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation.
He is alleged to have uttered defamatory statements on his Facebook page between April and July 2017 as well as other senior government officials.
According to the police, the engineering student created Facebook accounts which he used to publish defamatory statements against the Zambian leader as well as other senior government officials.
He is expected to appear in court on August 14 and 28 for mention and trial is expected to commence on November 3, 2017.
He has since been granted bail.
His posts have since gone viral as other citizens have reposted them. Enditem
