UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed a peace deal reached by the government of the Republic of Sudan and various armed groups on March 21, said a statement of Ban's spokesman.

Ban welcomed the signing of the roadmap agreement, which was proposed by the African Union High-level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), said the statement.

The latest initiative of AUHIP brought together the government of the Republic of Sudan, the National Umma Party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Minni Minawi to reach an agreement on a cessation of hostilities, humanitarian access and assistance and an inclusive national dialogue process, according to the statement.

Ban called on the Sudanese government to fully abide by the agreement and urged the other parties to sign it as well, it said.

“This would constitute a valuable step towards ending the war, providing assistance to communities in need and enhancing the environment for an inclusive national dialogue,” it said.
