Sunshine dimmed in Egypt

The Akure club lost 1-0 to fall out of the CAF Champions League

The Akure club lost 1-0 to fall out of the CAF Champions League

Egypt‘s Al-Ahly will battle Tunisia?s Esperance in the CAF Champions League final after they beat Sunshine Stars of Akure 4-3 on aggregate.

Six-time winners Ahly won the return leg semi-final against the boys from Akure 1-0 behind closed doors at the Military Stadium in Cairo after both teams played out a 3-3 draw in the first game in Ijebu Ode.

This will be the Egyptian giants ninth appearance in the final

The home team dominated possession and created more clear-cut chances, while Sunshine were resolute in defence, relying on a couple of fast counters to stretch their opponents? back four marshaled by the veteran Wael Goma.

Skipper Hossam Ghaly set up Mohamed Nagy ?Geddo? for the only goal of the night after 28 minutes, just as he had done in the first leg in Ijebu-Ode a fortnight ago, when he fired a brace.

The kick-off for this game was delayed by half an hour after Sunshine?s bus heading to the stadium was delayed by the Ahly fans.

Hamdy Al Said failed to score from the first big chance created by Al Ahly 10 yards from goal with the Sunshine goalkeeper at his mercy as he ballooned his effort into the stands.

In stoppage time, Mohamed Barakat?s header crashed against the crossbar with goalkeeper Henry Ayodele, a replacement for the unfit Moses Ocheje, well beaten

In the 53rd minute, ?Geddo? saw his header come off the cross bar with Ayodele again beaten as Ahly continued to press to double their lead.

Ahly continued to dictate the pace of this encounter, but late in the game, Sunshine Cameroonian midfielder Tamen Medrano carved out two chances that would have revived his team?s flagging hopes.

First in the 73rd minute, Medrano dashed into the box and fired to the left of goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy, who did well to dive full stretch and palm the ball to safety.

And a minute later, a Medrano shot from distance came off the post with the Egyptian shot stopper beaten

Those two efforts seem to instill more self belief in the visitors who continued to battle forward, but it was too little, too late as the clocked ticked away till the end.

Ahly will now face defending champions Esperance in the final with the first leg on the weekend of November 3 and 4, while the return leg match is fixed for a fortnight later.
