The Akure-based club is the only Nigerian team still in the Champion?s League
The Head Coach of Sunshine Stars FC, Gbenga Ogunbote, has assured Nigerians that the Akure-based club will not relent in its quest to qualify from the group stage of the Confederation of Africa (CAF) Champions League into the semi-final.
Slugged in Group A alongside Etoile-du-Sahel of Tunisia, Aso Chlef of Algeria and Esperance of Tunisia, Sunshine, in the three matches played so far, have lost 0-2 at home to Esperance; drew goalless with Etoile-du-Sahel in Tunis; and defeated Aso Chlef 2-0 at home to stay a joint second with Etoile on four points.
The club, in the return-leg matches, will meet both Aso Chlef and Esperance away, but at home against Etoile-du-Sahel.
?More is still required from us to enable us to qualify from the group stage to the next round of the Champions league,? Ogunbote said in an interview. ?It?s a collective responsibility for the players and we, the coaching crew, to achieve this goal. Our focus now is on our next away match in Algeria against Aso Chlef.?
Ogunbote added that it had been difficult combining the CAF league competition with the determination to also win the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) title.
?We still have some matches to play in the NPL and we also want to finish at the top four of the table. The league matches are also helping us to prepare for our continental matches. So a lot is expected from us as a team,?? he said.
Sunshine FC is currently seventh on the NPL table with 49 points, and five matches to go, including an outstanding one against Rangers FC of Enugu.
