Prof. Richard Frimpong Oppong, recently nominated for the Supreme Court of Ghana, has firmly denied any advocacy for LGBTQI+ activities in a country where such issues are highly debated and controversial.

His comments came during a session with Parliament’s Appointments Committee, a crucial step in the nomination process, where he addressed concerns related to his nomination.

The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, referenced a confidential National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) report suggesting that Prof. Oppong, identified as a libertarian, might prioritize issues such as surrogacy and LGBTQI+ rights if confirmed to the Supreme Court.

Prof. Oppong strongly refuted these claims, stating they do not align with his beliefs. He clarified that the report’s suggestion was inaccurate and did not represent his views.

“Wrong, and I reject in the strongest possible terms any assertion of that nature,” Prof. Oppong said.

“As an academic, I have engaged with the topic solely from the conflict of laws perspective. My personal views are separate from my academic work.”

Prof. Oppong further emphasized his stance by noting his family ties. “I have my wife and three daughters here, and they would be surprised to hear such allegations. I have no intention of promoting LGBTQI+ issues in Ghana.” This personal commitment to his family underscores his reliability and trustworthiness.

In response to a similar question from Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Prof. Oppong reiterated his position, stating, “I am a lawyer, not an anthropologist or sociologist.

From a personal perspective, I am married and believe that my wife’s support is the best foundation for my work.” This reiteration of his personal beliefs helps the audience connect with his values.

Prof. Oppong’s statements aim to dispel doubts about his views on LGBTQI+ rights as he continues the confirmation process for the Supreme Court nomination.
