At least two soldiers were killed in a shootout with suspected sea pirates in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, a military spokesperson said Thursday.

Abubakar Abdulahi, Spokesman of the Joint Military Force deployed to protect oil facilities in the Niger Delta, told reporters that the incident occurred on Wednesday.

He said the soldiers were part of a team dispatched in response to a distress call on an attack by pirates operating in southern Ijaw area of the state.

Three members of the team also sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving medical attention, Abdulahi added.

He added that efforts were on to bring the perpetrators to book. Enditem
