Increasing violent crime ?and insecurity in the Obuasi municipality saw no sign of abating yesterday when an alleged illegal miner who doubles as armed robber was gunned down at dawn ?by the Obuasi police at Anyinam, a suburb of Obuasi, last Tuesday.
Obuasi Divisional Police Crime Office, DSP Otuo Acheampong told newsmen in Obuasi that the incident occurred? on Tuesday morning, when five suspected intruders,
armed with cutlasses ?scaled ?the walls of ?the ?garage of MBC, the former mining contractors of AngloGold Ashanti to steal.
The armed policeman and private security men, working with the police were said to be have?been?attacked by the armed robbers with machetes and other crude implements as warning shots fired by the policeman could not stopped the attackers. As a result of the scuffled??between ,the policeman allegedly shot one of the intruders, resulting in his death, while the rest fled. DSP Otuo ?has confirmed the shooting this morning, saying that??the Obuasi ?police has commenced investigation into the incident?.The body has been deposited in Obuasi Government Hospital, where doctors pronounced the intruder dead.
The shooting incident is just an indication of the resurrection of violent crime in the municipality since the national security taskforce and inter-ministerial committee set??out?to flush out illegal miners in Obuasi and other communities, which resulted in the significant reduction of illegal mining activities in the municipality. ?Charles Appiah, an innocent ?community policeman?, ?innocently working for a living with AngloGold Ashanti security was savagely beaten and hacked at the back of head, which nearly caused his live. ?The Police has been informed but no arrest has been made.
In? a similar development,?the Interministerial Committee in conjunction with Western Regional Security Council, has?arrestedabout?45 Chinese miners operating illegally in the Upper and Lower Denkyira?districts. ?This was confirmed by Mr Teye Aidoo, Western Region Minister, who have sworn to make the region uninhabitable for illegal miners. ?The arrest confirms that the Chinese and other foreigners are still operating in the mining communities.
Commenting on illegal mining activities?in Obuasi, John Owusu of Corporate Affairs Department,?AngloGold Ashanti ?said galamsey activities ?by both local and Chinese miners have resurrected big time in the Obuasi ?municipality on AngloGold Ashanti concession. ???They are destroying AngloGold Ashanti mine plans, infrastructure, water bodies, farmlands and livelihoods, besides the fact that they are the main source of ?insecurity in the municipality.?
