Tanzania moves to address challenges facing persons with disabilities

Tanzanian authorities said Thursday that they are planning to review laws, policies and regulations governing persons with disabilities to resolve challenges facing them.

Patrobas Katambi, the deputy minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labor, Youth, Employment and People with Disabilities, said the Persons with Disabilities Act, No. 9 of 2010 clearly stipulates the rights of persons with disabilities but most employers have been ignoring the law.

Katambi told a meeting convened in Dodoma, the capital of Tanzania, to discuss challenges facing people with disabilities in public offices that the government also intends to start visiting employers in the private sector to see if they complied with the requirements for the people with disabilities at workplace.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed relevant authorities to do what needs to be done to help solve challenges facing persons with disabilities across the East African nation, he said. Enditem
