Tanzania’s ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) on Sunday expelled one of its long time and founding member in Zanzibar, Hassan Nassor Moyo. Tanzania
The expulsion of Moyo, a former cabinet minister in the Zanzibar revolutionary government, comes hardly six months to the October 2015 general election.
The decision to expel Moyo was reached during a meeting of Zanzibar’s West Region CCM National Executive Committee chaired by Yussuf Mohamed Yussuf.
Yussuf said Moyo was expelled from the party which had been in power for over the past 50 years after he was found breaching the party’s ethics.
Yussuf said Moyo has of late been addressing public rallies organized by Zanzibar’s leading opposition party the Civic United Front (CUF) which has formed a government of national unity with CCM in the revolutionary government of Zanzibar.
He said the expelled CCM cadre was heard also denouncing the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964 that formed Tanzania.
Reacting to the expulsion, Moyo said he was not intending to appeal because “there is no need to remain a member of a party that does not need you.”
Moyo was long time minister in different portfolios in Zanzibar, including Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
In 2014, CCM in Zanzibar expelled former minister in the Zanzibar government, Mansoor Yussuf Himid, who later joined opposition CUF.
Himid was a fiery politician and had been an active CCM leader. He was stripped of his CCM membership following accusations that he had taken a radical stand against the union structure. Enditem
