Tanzanian government to buy 100,000 tons of maize from farmers in 2022

The government of Tanzania plans to buy 100,000 tons of maize from farmers across the east African nation in the 2022 season, a cabinet minister said on Monday.’

Hussein Bashe, the Minster for Agriculture, told a news conference in the capital Dodoma that the buying of the food and cash crop will be done by state-run National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA).

He said maize harvests have decreased this year because most areas of the country did not receive enough rain due to climate change.

“But people should not worry about food insecurity because the government has enough food stocks,” said the minister, allaying fears of food shortages in some parts of the country.

“By March 2022, the government had more than 200,000 tons of cereals in its food reserves,” Bashe said. Enditem
