Tanzanian President John Magufuli has suspended two senior police officers and a senior official with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) reportedly for their involvement in economic sabotage allegations, the presidency said in a statement on Saturday night.

The statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communication at Chamwino State House in the capital Dodoma said Magufuli has suspended Shinyanga regional police commander Richard Abwao and Shinyanga regional crimes officer John Rwamlema to pave way for investigations into their alleged misconduct and economic sabotage claims.

According to the statement, the two were suspected to have colluded with TRA commissioner for Shinyanga region Jumbe Samson in assisting a private investor to evade tax.

The two regional police officers were also accused of not implementing directives made by Shinyanga regional commissioner Zainab Telack, said the statement.

In a statement released by Tanzania Police Force spokesperson David Misime, the three officials have reportedly been assisting the management of spirits maker in Shinyanga region called Canon to evade paying tax.

The statement said Canon was allegedly making use of “outdated” excise duty stamps as a way of evading tax and despite several reports being sent to TRA and the police in the region, no action was taken. Enditem
