Tanzanian police have arrested a 26-year-old Nigerian national with 59 pellets of cocaine weighing 800 grams at the country’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, police said on Monday.
Matanga Mbushi, JNIA police commander, said the Nigerian, identified as Christian Ugbechi, was arrested on Sunday evening as he was heading to his residence on arrival from France where he lives.
“The Nigerian lives in France but he works in Dar es Salaam,” Mbushi told a news conference. “The suspect hid 56 of the pellets in socks and three were ingested in his stomach.”
“He released the three pellets from his bowels on Monday and he is currently under special observation,” Mbushi said.
In August 2014, a Colombian citizen, Andres Felipe Balesteros Uribe, 28, was detained at the JNIA after he was caught with 13 packets of cocaine in his underpants.
While in police custody, the suspect released from his bowels six more packets of the narcotics in plastic wrappers. Police also discovered other drugs hidden in an interweaved polyethylene tube wrapped around his waist. Enditem
