arrested handcuffed

Tanzanian police on the Lake Victoria shores of Geita region on Wednesday arrested two men in connection with abducting five children and keeping them captive for almost four years.

The two, aged 35 and 53, will be taken to court after police completed their investigations, said Geita regional police commander Mponjoli Mwabulambo.

“We managed to arrest them following a tip-off from one of the captive children who managed to escape from the kidnappers,” Mwabulambo told a news conference.

He said the escaped child led the police to a forest where his partners were being held by the abductors.

One of the children, a 13-year-old boy, said he was abducted in 2013.

“The day I was abducted, I was going to a mosque. Suddenly, a man, who was riding on a bicycle, offered me a lift. The next thing I can recall is that I found myself in a forest grazing cattle,” the boy said.

Authorities have launched an operation in various forests in the region to see if there are other children being held captive and subjected to child labor, Mwabulambo said. Enditem
