Tanzania’s manufacturing industry has been growing at a pace of 9 percent annually in real terms, a country report on the manufacturing sector in the east African country said on Monday. manufacturing
The report released in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam said Tanzania’s manufacturing exports have grown strongly at about 31 percent per year between 2000 and 2010.
“The manufacturing sector in Tanzania has experienced rapid growth over the past decade,” the report said, adding that this phenomenon presented a great opportunity for the country to accelerate job creation and to achieve inclusive growth.
However, it said that albeit the impressive growth performance, the sector currently played a limited role in its contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product and employment.
The report is part of a regional study titled “Eastern Africa’s Manufacturing Sector: Promoting Technology, Innovation, Productivity And Linkages” commissioned by the African Development Bank’s Eastern Africa Resource Centre, covering seven Eastern African countries of Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania and Uganda.
Abdallah Kigoda, Tanzanian minister for Industry and Trade, said the role of manufacturing sector in social-economic development in the country has been articulated in the national and sectoral policy documents, plans and strategies.
“I call upon Tanzanian manufacturers to properly identify all the unfolding opportunities and make use of them. The government is committed to supporting manufacturers in their efforts to identify and make use of the many opportunities around the sector, ” he said.
“The country should unleash its potential for improved competitiveness by addressing the binding constraints identified and expand its market access within Africa and beyond,” said Tonia Kandiero, African Development Bank’s resident representative to Tanzania.
The main purpose of the report was to identify binding constraints, opportunities and strengths for the development of the manufacturing sector in Tanzania and provide recommendations for policy reform and manufacturing sector development strategy. Enditem
