Tanzania’s Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi on Monday appointed Othman Masoud Othman Sharif as new First Vice-President.
The appointment of Sharif was announced in a statement signed by the Zanzibar Chief Secretary Zena Said.
Sharif from the ACT-Wazalendo opposition party replaced Seif Sharif Hamad who died on February 17, 2021.
The statement said the appointment of Sharif was in accordance with the Zanzibar Constitution which requires the President to maintain the spirit of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
According to the statement, Sharif was appointed First Vice-President after consultations between President Mwinyi and the ACT-Wazalendo leaders.
