Tanzania’s Zanzibar port authorities are taking urgent steps to decongest the islands’ major port of Malindi, an official said on Wednesday.
Juma Makungu Juma, the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Communication and Transport, said the Zanzibar Port Corporation has introduced 24-hour work in which some of the containers at the port are being moved to Bwawani area for temporary storage, Juma told the House of Representatives.
He said the Zanzibar Port Corporation has also identified an area for the construction of an inland container depot to be used for keeping transit containers.
Juma said the Zanzibar Port Corporation was also in the process of procuring a mobile harbor crane that will speed up cargo loading and offloading and reduce congestion and waiting time. Enditem
