A former coordinator for the Nasara club of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the East Ayawaso Constituency, Sheikh Awal Larry has described as hypocritical, and an act of selective justice the decision of the National Council to suspend a founding member of the party, Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby for criticizing the principal witness of the petitioners in the ongoing election petition.

The renowned Muslim cleric questioned why such disciplinary actions were not taken against some leading members of the party who in the past made disparaging remarks that brought the name of the party into public odium.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Al-Hajj, Sheikh Larry, who is a known aficionado of Alan Kyerematen could not fathom why the current leadership of the party has sought to use brute means to punish any dissenting view from the party.

According to him, Dr Wereko Brobby was just being used as a sacrificial lamp to silence all discerning party members whose views run counter to the ?ill-informed decision by some selected members of the party to challenge the results of the December election at the Supreme Court.?

?If the likes of Sir John, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey? and all others who think like them says they have suspended Dr Wereko Brobby because he criticized the evidence given in court by Dr Bawumia, then they should roll back and punish all the party stalwarts who in the past made statements to downgrade former president Kufuor?s administration.?

The NPP?s? National Council suspended Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby from the party pending full disciplinary hearings over his criticism of the performance of the party?s 2012 running mate,Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a witness in the election petition case.

But, Sheikh Larry described the move as hypocritical and an administration of selective justice since other party stalwarts have been left unpunished for making more damaging statements about the party.

The Muslim cleric singled out comments made by the former Member of Parliament for Esikuma Odoben Brakwa, Hon. P C Appiah Ofori and foul mouth MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Adjapong which he said were more injurious to to the party but were allowed to go unpunished.

?What could have been more damaging to the NPP and former President Kufuor than alleging that all NPP MPs who voted to approve the sale of Vodafone were given 5000 dollars each? What did those who suspended Dr. Wereko Brobby do to PC Appiah Ofori when he made such allegation?

?What did the party do to Kennedy Adjapongwhen he called for the extermination of Gas and Ewes? Isn?t that more damaging to the fortunes of the party than Dr Wereko Brobby?s criticism of Dr Bawumia? Why was Kennedy Adjapong praised instead been punished?? he queried.

He maintained that, rather than bashing members who criticize the decision by the leadership of the party to challenge the results of the last election in court instead of preparing ahead of the 2016 election, they should allow for a free flow of information irrespective of how bitter they are.

Sheikh Awal Larry accused the petitioners of stalling the progress of party by deciding to put the court case ahead of the organization of the party ahead of the next elections in 2016.

To this end, he charged the current executives to start packing their belongings in preparedness to vacate their respective positions ahead of the party?s congress to elect National? Executive.

?I can tell you that the NPP is in court because the current executives thinkthat is the only window of opportunity to maintain their positions should the court rule in their favor? but I can say without any scintilla of doubt that the NPP will lose the court case, so the executives should start packing their belongings? he added.
