Our Telcos Must Address These TEXT Issues

By Alhaji Alhasan Abdulai

?LAST CALL! Your number 244000001 is selected today to participate for 10,000 GHC cash with only 1ghc! Send 5040 now and you can be the cash winner?. This is a message that comes to my phone regularly. Previously I had similar texts that promised cash wins of pounds and dollars ranging from 5,000usd to 100,000usd using Tigo, MTN and other reputable organizations including the United Nations Organization and other such organizations as sources of the texts. Apart from cash some texts have named the writer as winner of the United States government diversity lottery that provides opportunity for people to travel and live in the United States of America permanently. I do not understand how I can be invited to the US when I have not applied for the US diversity visa.

I believe that I am not the only person receiving such texts on my phone. Many people do receive carefully worded texts declaring them winners of lotteries they have not staked. Other messages I have been receiving emanate from the opposites sex wanting to speak with me by saying ?hello, call me? ?it is urgent? and ?I give you the last chance etc. In the beginning I considered the text as some amusement.

However I have come to realize that the faceless people behind the unsolicited texts have succeeded in using the tricks to dupe some innocent people. My advice to Tigo, MTN and the other reputable organizations concern is simple. Some faceless people are using your channels to woo people for their nefarious and selfish ends. Please take steps to stop them from using your companies name in their transactions. If you fail to act your company could be roped in when something untoward happen to your subscribers. I decided to advise MTN and Tigo because of the services they are rendering in the country for the benefit of the people. I wish to end by urging you to take the appropriate action on this matter because as the saying goes ?a stitch in time saves nine?
