The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has donated a cheque of GH?13,000 to the Tema Newtown fishmongers to expand the construction of a traditional fish smoking oven.
The donation is the second in less a year when the Assembly made a similar presentation of the same amount to the beneficiaries to begin the construction of the oven, which is popularly known as ?chorkor smoker?.
Presenting the cheque to the beneficiaries at the Tema Canoe Landing Beach Basin, Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, the metropolis? mayor, explained that the gesture formed part of the late president?s promise he made to the fishmongers and fisher folks during a visit he made to the place about two years ago.
?When the late President Mills visited the beach, he promised dredging the silted landing beach, reconstructing your mending wharf and empowering you with some capital to construct a traditional fish smoking oven for your catches. Today?s presentation is the second in a bid to help you construct more of such ovens,? the mayor stated.
He assured the beneficiaries that the government would continue to do its best by ensuring that its promise of providing a ?Better Ghana? for the citizenry is well carried out.
Receiving the donation, the Queen mother of the fishmongers Abo Korkor, thanked the Assembly and government for the financial support.
She promised that the money would be channeled into the appropriate venture and to the benefit of all the fishmongers at the Landing Beach Basin.
