Director of the Port of Tema, Jacob Adorkor speaking in an interview with the press noted that all aspects of operations in the port including cargo handling will be done electronically, adding that all data relating to such transactions will be transferred onto the electronic platform.

Mr. Adorkor opined that trucks which are due to transport cargo from the port to various destinations are currently being registered to ensure that such trucks are properly identified before they gain access to the port.

According to him, the system will ensure the total elimination of untoward and unapproved activities among other illegal practices.

??You can see a lot of changes at our central gate. Even vehicles are being registered, trucks which are coming to take cargo from the port are being registered and if the drivers of these trucks come and they want to enter, we have a boom barrier which will identify the truck before it can even enter.

If the truck is not supposed to enter, it will be diverted to another route and all these things will be coming. So our port is moving towards an electronic port?? he pointed out in the interview.

Mr. Adorkor further stated that the port Authority was also currently engaged in the removal of most of the offices from the port to the peripheries of the port, adding that transit operations was also being moved out of the port and that a transit park was being developed outside the port as well.

??This will ensure that all the activities associated with transit business including customs activities will be done outside the port and in the new yard that is being developed. So when you enter the port it means you are going to take your cargo. It will only be the cargo owner and the machine. You load your truck, you get out, you do your customs processes and you go away?? he further explained.

According to him, the port was gradually attaining the status of an electronic port and that all things being equal, that feat would be realised and achieved in the next three to four years time and will be fully electronically compliant by that time.
