Almost 26,100 German farmers were farming organically last year, up from 16,500 a decade previously, according to figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday.
The proportion of organic farmers rose to 10 per cent last year, up from 6 per cent in 2010.
Organic farming covered an area of 1.6 million hectares, 69 per cent up on that in 2010. The area makes up 9.6 per cent of the total.
More than half of the organic farmers are located in the southern states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg.
According to Destatis, the total number of farming operations in 2020 was 262,800, with an ongoing trend towards larger and fewer farms.
