Strike action by the Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) – Legon has turn students of the University of Ghana into cleaners as this picture is evidently showing.Kitchen and bathhouse of residents of the ‘traditional Halls’ and its annexes have not been scrubbed since Friday.Students took it upon themselves to have the place cleaned up since it was stinking.
Speaking to OMGghana.com ,Augustine Kabo, the chairman of UG TEWU, said the union has being having series of meeting to let the government pay them and hence have been absent at their posts.Kabo said they were supposed to be paid two months back in October last year ,three months arrears in December and three months in February, however none of the payments have been made.
Meanwhile, porters at Mensah Sarbah Hall annex C&D have admitted the union is on a strike action and hence are not working (taking keys and responsibilities in the hall) although they are present at their post-Probably that is what the union refer to ‘EMERGENCY MEETINGS’.
If students have to work out like SHS students, then i guess the school has a long way to go to reach great heights. Generally, Tewu handles everything that ensures the smooth running of both academic and social activities in the school from lecture halls to the residence halls. If this strike action dubbed ‘emergency meetings’ continues, academic and social activities would be at a standstill in the school.
OMGghana.com would follow-up on the story as the week activities begin on the campus.
