‘When one life ends , another begins ‘,quoted from Jake in Avatar seems to explain what the Pentagon thinks of collateral damage and battle strategy. In the new frontier of war, machines would take on a surrogate role and assisst as well as defend their human controllers during battle. It isn’t out of place any more to say Hollywood is a big influence on the Pentagon’s artillery and way of war.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the United States thinks the ‘Avatar’ isn’t a movie anymore. They intend to bring the technology of surrogate combatant robots to the battlefield to be a game changer and give US and its allies an upper hand in future conflicts. Scary huh? That’s not the only scary part. These surrogate machines are being equiped with state of the art weaponry to cause considerable damage to enemy target. As far fetched as the idea was ,it’s now happening and the military might soon start using it in future combat operations.According the agency, “the Avatar program will develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine and allow it to act as the soldier’s surrogate.”These robots should be smart and agile enough to do the dirty work of war, Darpa notes. That includes the “room clearing, sentry control [and] combat casualty recovery.” And all at the bidding of their human partner.
We’ve entered a new dimension of war and who knows what the future holds for these ideas and inventions. We can only hope and pray it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.Because that’ll mean you and i might also have a feel of its arsenal, which wouldn’t leave a smile on ou face ,so to say.
