“This is what the Lord says: Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, declares the Lord.” – Jeremiah 9:23-24 – NIV
In the first part of this article last week, we stated that the greatest pursuit in life is to pursue God because it will lead to eternal life. We ended on the note that God reveals Himself in many ways including nature. Please read on about other ways in which we can know God and pursue Him. Please enjoy and share with others!
SO HOW DO WE KNOW GOD?
God has told us in scripture about how to know Him – it is to believe in Christ Jesus, His One and only Son as the One through whom we come to Him, the Almighty God. Believing in Christ is acknowledging that we are sinners separated from the Holy and Righteous God; it is repenting of our sins and accepting God’s offer of forgiveness through Christ’s work on the cross. Knowing God is believing that, through grace we have new life, the life of a child born anew into the family of God.
Jesus is asking us the same question today as He asked the disciples in Luke 9:20 – “Who do you say I am? The Holy Spirit will help us to answer, and as Jesus said we will see the Father when we see Him.
None of us is born with insight into who God is – such insight is given at the new birth – John 1:13 – “children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” New birth therefore comes with new perspectives, new motivations and new attitudes to life. New birth also comes with God’s transforming power – God’s dynamic Word, the Scripture, becomes alive and nourishes us to grow, as we read and meditate on it and as we commune with God in prayer.
1. KNOWING GOD GIVES US THE DESIRE TO BE LIKE HIM
Children yearn to be like their parents. Society also declares that like father like son. God created us for Himself and His desire is that we will grow up and be like Him – “we need to reach the unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” – Ephesians 4:13. God is Holy and so must we be; He is righteous, just, faithful, gracious, abounding in mercy, full of love and we must exhibit these traits in our lives. As we know Him deeper, He makes us more like His Son Jesus who is equal with Him in the Godhead.
2. KNOWING GOD REVEALS THE TRUTH ABOUT OURSELVES
We are sinful, vile, unreliable, vindictive, and headstrong. Isaiah realised who he was when He saw God’s glory – Isaiah 6:1-5. As we experience God, we realise that He is everything we are not – this lets us know the truth about ourselves and that truth sets us free from the chains of self-centredness to accept His gracious offer of salvation that eventually leads us towards a Christ-like life.
3. KNOWING GOD ENABLES US TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE WORLD WE LIVE IN
God is still in control of His world. Never mind anything that seems to contradict it. Kingdoms have come and gone but God is still the immutable God. He is working His purposes out as year succeeds to year. He is firmly in charge as He has always been -kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers – you name them! They and their nations are under His control.
4. KNOWING GOD GIVES US STRENGTH AND SECURITY
There seems to be so much wickedness around – so much brutality; such naked abuse of power; such greed, such ruthlessness! If we didn’t know God was in charge, we would be in panic and might even contemplate suicide to end it all. But praise God evil will not win because as we read in Daniel 11:32b – “but the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits.” – NKJV. Let the wicked rulers do their worst, thinking they can corrupt the elect of God! Our knowledge of God will enable us to know that we are more than conquerors in Christ!!
5. KNOWING GOD INTRODUCES US TO THE ETERNAL DIMENSION OF LIFE
Knowing God enables us to recognize that we are new born babes who need the grace of God to keep growing. As Jesus says in Luke 9:23-26 – knowing Him as the Christ demands our decision to follow Him in a life of total surrender which will make us people of His kingdom when He returns in the glory of the Father and of the Holy angels. Knowing God is having eternal life.
THE UNFATHOMABLE GOD
There will always be things about God that are difficult to understand, things that our human minds cannot fathom – things like the Trinity – God as One and yet in Three distinct Personalities of Father, Son and Holy Spirit – things like the glory of God – His eternal presence with us in our daily lives – things like His sovereignty – doing what pleases Him including permitting sin and wickedness to thrive in the world.
In our journey to know God we will come across unfathomable mysteries about Him – we read in Deuteronomy 29:29 “that the secret things belong to the LORD our God but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law”- Yes there are things we will not understand but there are many more things that have been revealed to us. Instead of focussing on what we do not understand, let us take advantage of the things we do understand and live by them.
HE IS ABLE
Gods’ grace is sufficient in all our situations and so let us lay all our burdens before Him including our doubts, fears, our anger against Him and others, our needs and our desires. Let us allow Him to make Himself known to us so that we can know Him. Our journey in life will be more fulfilling and our quest for Him more rewarding. God too will be pleased with us rejoice over us, as we glorify Him with our lives – Zephaniah 3:17 – “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His Love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” (NIV)
