Referendum Voting

Coalition of National Sovereignty, a political pressure group has waded into the debate to vote ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ in the December 17th referendum to introduce partisan election of District Assembly members and the Unit Committee Members.

It says “While the Coalition may supports the idea of popular election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives. We strongly opposed to partisan election of District Assembly members and the Unit Committee Members.

It is the view of the Coalition that local government authorities encounter myriad problems and a non-partisan District Assembly provides the needed insulation from the wrangling of partisan politics.

The current system of non-partisan election of District Assembly members provides a unifying platform and the necessary incentives for cohesion to effectively implement the concept of decentralization as envisaged by the constitution. ”

Politics in Ghana, according to Bernard Mornah, the Spokesperson for Coalition National Sovereignty has taken an ethnocentric dive since the election of Akufo-Addo and a vote for ‘Yes’ would be a vote for the extension of clanism and ethnocentrism into multi-ethnic communities, where communal spirits are put above political differences.

For the above mentioned and other reasons, the Spokesperson for Coalition National Sovereignty said his outfit is calling on all eligible voters to come out in their numbers to vote a big ‘No’ to reject the amendment of article 55[3].

Speaking at a news conference in Accra, Comrade Mornah said “we are calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians, women groups, civil society organizations to join the campaign for a ‘No’ vote.

Whiles at it let’s use the opportunity to call on all, to be vigilante in this referendum owing to the experiences of the past referendum on the creation of the new regions in 2018.”
