Today, the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity (HCIF-PFS) wholeheartedly welcome the news of the release of Ambassador Alex Saab is a Venezuelan diplomat who was arrested on 12 June, 2000 when the plane in which he was travelling stopped to refuel at the Amilcar Cabral International Airport in Cape Verde.
The Venezuelan humanitarian Ambassador suffered arbitrary detention and tortured in Cape Verde before extradited to the United States in 2021. His kidnapping and incarceration was due to politically-motivated allegations.
Today’s development is the product of concerted efforts and pressure exerted by good people of the world, including but not limited to tested and competent volunteers of the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity (HCIF-PFS). The Foundation has spent the past years pressing for the release of Alex Saab, who was incarcerated in the United States.
In recent months concern has been growing about Alex Saab’s health and the Hugo Chavez Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity has intensified its efforts to bring his freedom and reunite with his family in Venezuela. The next step should be ending the meddling mentality in the internal matters of Venezuela and ending also all other coercive measures and collective punishment against the Venezuelan people.
While we warmly welcome the release of Ambassador Alex Saab, we thank all those who have supported the joint three-year campaign spearheaded by the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity for the release of the Venezuelan diplomat.
