Umar Sando, Jibor Ali and Sando Ali, jailed 20 years each for robbery, are to stand trial for the murder of Mr Ekow Quansah Hayford, late Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfanteman.

The three were involved in a highway robbery at Jacobu in the Asante Region and were arrested, tried and jailed.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Isaac Ken Yeboah, Director of the CID (CID) told the media at a press conference to give updates on reported criminal activities, crime patterns and success stories.

He recounted that on October 8, 2020 at about 2330 hours armed robbers attacked, robbed and killed the then sitting Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East, Mr Ekow Quansah Hayford.

Investigation was taken over by the CID Headquarters and some suspects were initially arrested where his mobile phone was retrieved in Kumasi.

Whilst investigation was ongoing, some armed robbers numbering about six attacked vehicles on the Jacobu-Obuasi Highway on May 11, 2021 at about 0200 hours, he explained.

COP Yeboah said a Police Patrol Team encountered them and in the ensuing shoot out, one of the armed robbers who was later identified as Mohammed was killed and the three others were arrested.

During investigation, they admitted having taken part in the attack and murder of the late Hayford on October 8, 2020 with the deceased Mohammed as their leader.

They were subsequently charged with robbery based on the facts of the May 11 2021 incident.

On 18 June 2021 after trial, they were convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment each.

All the convicts are to be arraigned before court in respect of the robbery and murder of the late Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford.

Mr Hayford 50, was shot by gunmen who stopped his vehicle on the Abeadze-Dominase–Abeadze-Duadzi-Mankessim road when he was returning from a campaign trip. His driver was also left wounded.

He was believed to have answered questions from the robbers whether he was the MP for the Constituency.
