As a verdant traveler, I have been at many destinations in India as well as abroad. But nothing could I find more eventful than my maiden and the only trip to Tirupati last month. Thousands of people were waiting in queues without any ruefulness, enchanting sounds in honorifics of Lord Venkateswara were making the atmosphere precious and full of spiritualism, while surrounding views of mountains and valleys were a real treat for eyes and senses; being at Tirumala Tirupati Shrine was completely incredible experience, at least for me who have never been to a destination with such a striking religious significance.

This ancient and scared temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and is located on the seventh peak of Tirumala Hill.

The temple houses an awe-inspiring idol of the Lord, and it’s believed that someone who prays in front of this divine deity gets all his dreams fulfilled. Tirupati Balaji Temple is said to be the richest temple in the world, being thronged by millions of pilgrims annually who come to have Lord Balaji’s darshan. Being a masterpiece of Dravidian style of architecture, the temple itself is no less than a wonder. With such a great religious fervor and excellent architectural beauty, this holy shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India. Let’s see how Tirupati got this distinction.

There are many legends depicting religious and historical significance of this town.

One famous legend has it that once the great sage Bhrigu wanted to know who among the trinity Gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva – is the most powerful. To calm his curiosity, he went to Vaikuntha – a place in heaven where Lord Vishnu resides with her concert Luxmi. When the sage arrived to Vishnu’s adobe, he was resting with her wife and hence ignored the presence of Bhrigu. Finding this insulting, sage Bhrigu got angry and kicked Lord Vishnu at his chest. But answering to this action, Lord Vishnu merely asked if he got hurt on his foot. Luxmiji was watching the entire episode, and she got furious, which result her to leave the Vaikuntha immediately. After sometime, Lord Vishnu started to feel loneliness and he too left his adobe. He began to live inside an anthill in Tirumala hills. Preplanned by Lord Brahma, Vishnu got married with Padma, an incarnation of Luxumiji. As the Lord didn’t have any money with him to arrange the marriage, he took debt from Kuber – the God of Wealth. Now, it’s believed that someone who donates at the temple helps Lord Vishnu to repay his debt.

Today, the temple is one of the most-visited pilgrimage destinations in India. All arrangements for ‘Tirupati darshan’ are made by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). However, a variety of packages for Tirupati from various cities are also provided to ensure pilgrims hassle-free and comfortable Tirupati darshan.
