Togo to foster 300,000 hectares of forest by 2021

Togo will foster 300,000 hectares of forest by 2021 so as to achieve 30 percent vegetation coverage by 2050, national daily Togo-Presse reported on Thursday.

The National Reforestation Program (PNR) hopes to grow 34,400 hectares of new forests and to rehabilitate 265,600 hectares of existing forests.

“To date, since 1977, almost 50,000 hectares area have been reforested, as state owned, private, community and educational institutions’ plantations,” Andre Johnson, Minister of Environment and Forest Resources, said in an address to mark the National Tree Day on June 1, which was instituted in 1977.

He explained about 4,000 hectares of areas are reforested every year in the country but lamented a gradual decline of the nationwide vegetation cover.

From 1980s to 2010, reforested areas averaged 1,000 to 2,000 hectares per year.

Johnson said his country expects to achieve at least 5,000 hectares reforested areas a year. Enditem
