Two adult lovers tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that engulfed a block of a compound house in Fiapre, located in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region.

The victims, 35-year-old Alex Antwi, a newly recruited Metro Mass Transit (MMT) conductor, and his 17-year-old lover, known only as Sharifa, were sleeping in their room when the fire broke out at approximately 11 PM on Wednesday. At the time, the young man’s mother was also asleep with his eight other siblings in a different room within the same house.

Residents had to retreat as thick smoke billowed from the building, making rescue efforts difficult. Fortunately, the mother and the other eight siblings were able to escape the fire unharmed, but the two lovers tragically perished, their bodies burnt beyond recognition.

The Sunyani Fire Service intervened to extinguish the fire after the two had already succumbed to the flames.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The charred bodies of the two lovers were taken to the morgue by police officers when the Bono Minister, Madam Justina Owusu Banahene, and Sunyani West Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kusi Boadum, visited the scene. Friends, sympathizers, and other family members arrived to console the grieving family.

During their visit, both the Regional Minister and the MCE took turns consoling the mother and family members of the young man. It was revealed that the female lover was not from Fiapre town.

Madam Justina Owusu Banahene also offered advice to the sympathizers, urging them to be cautious with fire, especially before going to bed.

She emphasized the importance of ensuring that all electrical gadgets are turned off before sleeping.

Additionally, she assured the family of government support through the Assembly and NADMO as they await the official report from the Fire Service regarding the cause of the fire outbreak.
