A tragic incident unfolded on the Oti River in Dambai as a ferry repair staff lost his life while attempting to fix a stranded vessel.
According to Charles Awuranyi, the Assembly member for Dambai Central Assembly, the ferry had become stuck in the middle of the river due to an engine failure.
In response, two staff members entered the river to repair the ferry, but tragically, one of them drowned during the operation.
“The incident occurred around 3 pm yesterday,” Awuranyi told Channel One News.
“The engineers discovered a fault with the ferry after it became stuck with goods and passengers onboard. Two staff members then attempted to address the issue underwater.”
He expressed sorrow over the loss of life and emphasized the need for a permanent solution to prevent such incidents in the future, providing a sense of hope for the community.
“The deceased has been retrieved from the water and taken to Worawora Hospital for preservation,” Awuranyi added.
It’s a pressing issue affecting our community, and we urgently appeal for the ferry to be restored to optimal condition to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
The incident has highlighted concerns about the safety and maintenance of ferry operations on the Oti River, prompting urgent calls for immediate action to ensure the safety of passengers and crew alike.
