The Ministry of Transport has conducted an inspection of Sunyani Airport in preparation for its official launch soon.

The renovation of the airport started in 2019 and was inspected by the senior officials of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Transport ministry lead by the sector Minister, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah.

He was accompanied by the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw-Chereme and host of Party Officers including Kwame Baffoe Abronye, Bono regional Chairman of NPP.

The minister of Transport said the airport has “strategic goals,” with a plan for expanding the ran-way to accommodate other sizeable plans as well as night services in the future.

The Minister said the first phase of the rehabilitation and expansion of the airport has been completed, however, his visit will pave way for the President to perform a ground-breaking ceremony for work to begin on the second phase of the project in September this year.
Mr. Asiamah, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work so far.

Mr Asiamah said the work was in line with the vision of the Government to develop and promote domestic airline services.

The Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu Banahene, said once it is operational, it will ease trade and boost economic activities in the region.

She said it was always hectic for people in the region to travel long hours to Accra and expressed the hope that the people would patronize the facility to enhance domestic air transport.

The Regional Minister said she was optimistic that the facility would be commissioned for commercial flight operation in the next two weeks, saying Passion and other domestic airlines were all ready to commence operations in Sunyani.

The Sunyani Airport was closed down in 2015 due to the poor state of infrastructure and deplorable condition of the runway
