Fifteen artisanal miners were successfully rescued on Sunday after a shaft at a gold mine collapsed in Zimbabwe, state-run Herald Newspaper reported.

The miners were trapped Thursday morning when a mineshaft at Redwing Mine in Penhalonga, about 265 kilometers from the capital Harare, collapsed due to suspected earth tremors. Satellite technology was deployed to indicate the miners’ exact location and a hole was then drilled to bring them to the surface. Efforts to rescue the miners on the first day of the incident were hampered by unstable ground.

Mine accidents involving artisanal miners are common in Zimbabwe, a country rich in mineral resources.
