A trial of 14 soldiers accused of kidnapping, murder and desertion, among other offences, began Saturday in Nigeria’s Rivers State.

General Officer Commanding Army 6 Division, Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham told reporters that the suspects, including an army major and two captains, are officers and soldiers of 6 Division.

The offenses for which the accused persons are being tried range from murder to attempted murder, kidnapping and desertion, Sarham said.

Others are offenses in relation to public and service property, disobedience to standing orders and conduct to the prejudice to service discipline, he added.

According to Sarham, the trial is not only aimed at prosecuting the suspects but also discouraging others from indulging in criminality. Enditem
