Arowolo’s counsel says his client is too ill to withstand the rigours of trial

The trial of Akolade Arowolo, 31, accused of killing his banker wife, Titilayo, last year, was again stalled on Thursday by his purported ill-health.

Arowolo’s case was adjourned earlier this week when he slumped at an Ikeja High Courtroom in Lagos where he is standing trial for allegedly stabbing his wife to death on June 24, 2011, at their Isolo residence.

Following the incident which immediately generated a lot of media coverage and huge public reaction, Arowolo was charged to court by the State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused had pleaded not guilty to a one-count charge of murder, and had been remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons since the trial started.

Arowolo arrived at the resume hearing, accompanied by a prison official. But he only sat in the court gallery, as his counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku, told the court that the accused was too ill to withstand the “rigour of the trial”.

?I am craving the indulgence of the court for an adjournment due to the fact that the accused is critically ill and unable to withstand the rigours of trial. I have met with the prosecution to inform them that the accused is still not feeling fine and that the matter will not go on,” he said.

The DPP Director, Olabisi Ogungbesan, did not object to the call made by the defence for another adjournment.

She however stated that her team would be presenting three more witnesses, including the state’s Chief Pathologist, Prof. John Obafunwa.

The presiding judge, Lateefat Okunnu, adjourned the case to September 14, 2012, and told Arowolo’s counsel to ensure that he gets proper medical attention pending the next hearing.
