A total of 12 listeners from Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central Regions have emerged winners of this year Mother’s Day quiz held during the Nestlé Nutrition Line (NNL) a Five-minute radio programme.

Each of the winners would receive a hamper of assorted Nestlé products as their reward to be given to their respective Mother figures.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said the world was going through times of uncertainty, but occasions such as Mother’s Day celebration could not be forgotten due to the crucial role mother’s played in society.

“Mothers are pillars in this society, so we want to appreciate and reward our loyal listeners through this quiz,” it said.

The statement said listeners were required to listen in to the NNL programme, gather salient points on the topic being discussed, and call into the Nestlé Ghana consumer care line, to answer questions asked on the programme on the day of the quiz.

The statement said this years’ quiz focused on iron, a mineral that helps to carry oxygen in the hemoglobin of red blood cells throughout the body so cells could produce energy.

It said studies had shown that the category of persons that were at risk of being deficient on that nutrient included; children under five, adolescent girls, female athletes, pregnant and lactating mothers and strict vegetarians.

The statement said a deficiency could occur if one’s intake was too low to replace the amount lost every day and it could cause anemia and lead to symptoms like fatigue.

It said as part of Nestlé’s efforts to create awareness on the nutrient, the entire month of May was dedicated to educating listeners on good food choices to help those deficient in iron and meet their daily iron needs.

According to the statement, the appropriate intake of food items such as fruits, meat, fish, liver, palm oil, eggs, beans, Kontomire, Ademe, alefu, mbokorbokor, Gboma and snails could help boost iron.

The initiative, it stated reaffirmed the company’s purpose of enhancing the quality of life and contributing to a healthier future in line with Nestlé’s orientation as a Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company.

The NNL is a consumer education programme, which aims at providing consumers with basic nutritional information on a day to day basis to help them build sound nutrition knowledge and empower them to make informed choices related to their diet and health.

It is a Five-minute radio programme aired on weekdays at 0715 on an Accra-based radio station and simultaneously on other affiliate stations across the country.
