A shooting incident in a Moreleta Park townhouse complex in Pretoria turned into a hostage situation when a man took several people hostage, police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said.

Two people reportedly were shot dead before the man took five people hostage, including two police officers. The deaths remain to be officially confirmed.

Miller said the drama started at about 2 p.m. following reports of gunshots.

Police has secured the safe release of the five hostages, who were unharmed. It’s unclear what sparked the standoff.

Police refused to identify the gunman who was reported to behave erratically at times. Local reports said the gunman has been killed. Enditem
