Two women attending a funeral at Akyem Mamanso in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region have sustained severe injuries after they were knocked down by a speeding Trotro vehicle, with registration number GW8107-19, driven by a reckless driver.

The accident resulted in crippling the victims – one woman got her two legs cut off on the spot, while the other suffered a terrible fracture of her legs.

The tragedy happened on Saturday, April 6th, 2024, when people gathered at a funeral to mourn with a bereaved family and pay their last respects to the departed soul.

News Ghana’s Bretuoba Nana Kwame Marfo (Akyem Chia Piesie) spoke to an eyewitness, Gyimah, popularly known as Barimah Waakye.

Gyimah revealed that the said funeral, where the crash happened, was held in remembrance of one of the commercial Trotro drivers who passed away.

According to him, oftentimes when a driver dies, their colleagues do a ritual – they storm the durbar ground and drive vehicles without regard to the danger or the consequences of their actions. The drivers sometimes lose control of the steering and crash their cars into other motors or mourners with a lot of force, usually deliberately or under the influence of alcohol.

Gyima narrated that a similar practice occurred on 6th April, when two drivers took the funeral ground by storm in their Trotro vehicle to display driving skills in honour of their deceased workmate.

Unfortunately, things went wrong. What was meant to entertain the mourners resulted in a catastrophe and impaired the walking ability of two innocent women. The vehicles knocked down the women and ran over their legs. One sustained a fracture of her legs, and the other one’s legs got amputated instantly.

The injured women are currently receiving medical attention at the New Abirem Government Hospital.
