Two suspected thieves were gunned down by police during an escape attempt at a police station in Gatsibo, a district located in North Eastern Rwanda, Rwandan police Spokesperson Celestin Twahirwa Monday.
The incident comes a few weeks after one of the former personal physician of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and one of the country’s most prominent cardiologists, Dr. Emmanuel Gasakure, was killed in a similar shooting incident at the Remera Police Station in a suburb of the capital Kigali, where he was in detention in February 2015.
In a similar incident, two male suspects were shot dead last week as they attempted to run away from detention in a police station of Musanze, a district located in Northern Rwanda.
Following repetitive shootings incidents during various escape attempts at different police stations in Rwanda, authorities in Kigali said they would look at measures to beef up security in detention centers.
In a statement issued Monday in Kigali, the Rwandan police appeal to the general public that whoever is suspected of committing any offence should abide by the law and avoid taking violent means to elude justice.
“We are very confident of our [Rwandan] justice system and people should trust justice instead of taking dangerous shortcuts which in some cases cost highly including loss of lives,” Chief Supertendent Twahirwa was quoted in a statement as saying. Enditem
