Typhoon Goni was to reach Kyushu Island early Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency said, warning of high waves, heavy rains and strong winds in the region.

Six people were injured and more than 100 residents evacuated from their homes on the smaller Islands lying off Japan’s south-west, including Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper reported.

At 7 pm (1000 GMT), the eye of the storm was about 130 kilometres north-west of Amami island, travelling north-east at 40 kilometres per hour, the agency said.

The 15th typhoon of the season carried maximum sustained winds of 180 kph and gusts of 252 kph, the agency said.

Rainfall of up to 400 millimetres was forecast for the south-western island of Shikoku and up to 250 millimetres for Kyushu and the Kinki and Tokai regions by Tuesday evening, according to the agency.

Typhoon Goni earlier killed at least 14 people when it passed over the Philippines triggering flooding and landslides, officials said Sunday.
