The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has lifted its long-standing visa ban on Nigerians, which has been in effect since October 2022.

The decision to lift the ban came after extensive negotiations described as “mutually beneficial” between the governments of Nigeria and the UAE.

Nigeria’s Information Minister, Mohammed Idris, announced on Monday that the UAE’s decision includes new controls and conditions for Nigerian visitors.

The decision requires documentation of identity and travel history to generate a verification number necessary for visa applications. According to UAE government sources, exceptions to these requirements are made for applicants aged 13 years and younger.

The UAE initially imposed the visa ban, citing concerns over improper conduct and violations of visa regulations. Tensions escalated further when Nigeria drastically reduced Emirates Airlines’ weekly flights, reportedly in response to the UAE’s restrictions on Nigerian airliner Air Peace.

Following diplomatic efforts led by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, including discussions with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan since taking office in May 2023, significant progress was made towards resolving the impasse.

Emirates Airlines had previously suspended operations in Nigeria due to challenges in repatriating earnings. Still, it announced plans to resume daily flights between Lagos and Dubai starting October 2023.

The service will also enhance cargo capacity, offering over 300 tonnes weekly on passenger aircraft’s lower decks to meet demand.

The resumption of entire flight operations signifies a positive step towards restoring robust air connectivity and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the UAE.
