Uganda fast-tracks resumption of talks with Rwanda on border issue

Uganda is fast-tracking the resumption of talks with Rwanda over the latter’s common border closure about two years ago, a top government official said here on Saturday.

Henry Okello Oryem, Uganda’s minister of state for international affairs, told Xinhua by telephone that the authorities in Kampala and Kigali are in discussions to ease tensions and resolve the outstanding border dispute.

“We are doing everything possible and working hard to make sure we resolve the continued and unfortunate closure of our border with Rwanda. This is something that for us is a priority,” said Oryem.

“In the last few months, there have been changes in the government of Rwanda and army. We need to take the advantages of those changes and see how to help the process move forward,” said Oryem.

Rwanda closed its border in February, 2019, after accusing Uganda of incarcerating its citizens. Uganda denied the allegations and instead accused Rwanda of infiltrating its security circles and incarcerating its citizens too.

The border closure, according to experts, continues to affect the trade and movement of people between the two east African countries. Enditem
