Uganda’s schools and institutions of higher learning will remain closed amid the lasting COVID-19 pandemic, a senior education official said here on Monday.

Only candidate classes and finalists in institutions of higher learning are open, tweeted Alex Kakooza, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education and Sports. He said the rest has to wait until the government decides on a date for reopening.

In October 2020, the Ugandan government reopened candidate classes, seven months after all schools, colleges and universities were closed in this country due to COVID-19, saying a plan for further reopening schools for non-finalist learners would be decided by January 2021.

Health ministry data indicates that the country is still grappling with the surging COVID-19 caseload. As of Jan. 23, the country logged a total of 39,149 cases, 13,861 recoveries and 317 deaths after the first case was recorded on March 21, 2020.
