A Ugandan who was farming on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) side of the border was on Monday abducted from his garden by suspected DRC militiamen, a Ugandan police spokesman said.
Elly Matte, Rwenzori regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone on Tuesday that two armed men kidnapped Isaya Mbeeta of Kanungu district.
Matte said the militiamen are now asking for a ransom of 600 U.S. dollars before they release Mbeeta.
The victim, according to police, is said to have left his home in Uganda and crossed to his garden in DRC from where he was kidnapped.
At the porous common border, it is normal for people to have gardens on the DRC side of the border and yet they stay on the Ugandan side.
Matte said efforts to rescue Mbeeta are ongoing.
In the recent past, suspected Congolese Mai-Mai militia kidnapped Ugandan fishermen on the disputed waters on Lake Albert and Edward, located at the Uganda and DRC common border. Enditem
