The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) on Wednesday promised to work closely with the new administration in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland in northern Somalia.

Raisedon Zenenga, UNSOM officer-in-charge and deputy special representative of the UN secretary-general for Somalia also congratulated Said Abdullahi Deni on his election as president of Puntland in Tuesday’s balloting in the regional assembly.

“We look forward to working closely with the administration of president Deni in Puntland,” Zenenga said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

The 55-year-old Deni won Puntland regional leadership contest with 35 out of 66 vote, defeating Asad Osman Abdullahi who gained 31 votes.

Zenenga lauded Puntland’s electoral commission for organizing and conducting a transparent, peaceful, free and fair electoral process.

Deni, a businessman and a politician, was former federal government minister for planning and international cooperation. Enditem
