The United Nations on Tuesday honored three Zambian peacekeepers, who died last year while on peace keeping missions, with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal of Honor.
Last year, Zambia lost three peacekeeping soldiers who were serving in the Central African Republic (CAR) and in Darfur, Sudan.
Lazarous Kapembwa, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, attended the ceremony held at the UN headquarters, according to a statement released by the embassy.
The Zambian envoy received the medal on behalf of the fallen Zambian peacekeepers who were among the 61 peacekeepers who died during peacekeeping missions last year.
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, paid tribute to the peacekeepers and expressed concerns over the increasing dangers of peacekeeping across the globe.
According to him, peacekeeping required a clear mandate and support of all stakeholders and was one of the strongest expressions of international solidarity and multilaterism. Enditem
