United Nations peacekeepers in Mali have been deployed near the border with Mauritania to support the military following a recent attack in which 20 people of government forces were killed, a UN spokesman said on Monday.

The head of the mission, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, reiterated the world organization’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Mali, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Annadif, on Twitter, condemned the Sunday attack as “cowardly” and expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to those injured, the spokesman said.

While no faction claimed responsibility for the attack, published reports said there were indications it was done by jihadists linked to al-Qaida, who have staged similar attacks in the western regions of Mali. Enditem
