UN report on Haiti rape shows few prosecutions

0

The United Nations mission in Haiti says the prosecution of rape cases in the impoverished Caribbean nation remains bogged down, with justice rarely served.

A study released Tuesday by the U.N.?s human rights section in Haiti examines a sample of 62 rape complaints filed over a three-month period in 2011 at some of Port-au-Prince?s busiest police stations.

None of the complaints had gone to trial more than a year after they were filed.

The government prosecutor?s office in Port-au-Prince reviewed only 25 of the 62 cases, and judicial authorities were ordered to investigate 11 of them. Of those, four were dismissed and the rest remain under investigation. Only one was referred to trial, which is pending.
